CIVIL DIVISION

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Civil Division has two offices to serve La Porte County. The main office is located in La Porte inside the La Porte County Annex Building. The "satellite" office is located in Michigan City inside the Michigan City Courthouse. Both offices are open to serve the public Monday thru Friday, 8:00AM - 4:00PM, except for government allowed holidays.

The primary functions of the deputies working in the Civil Division are to serve and execute the service of Summons, Subpoenas, Evictions, Writs of Assistances, Notice of Sheriff Sales, and Executions. They also collect delinquent state taxes for the Indiana Department of Revenue and conduct foreclosure sales on houses.

La Porte Civil Office

This office handles paperwork filed within the La Porte Circuit Court, Superior Court # 3, out of county, and out of state.

Michigan City Civil Office

This office handles paperwork filed within the Michigan City Superior Courts # 1, # 2, #4, and Magistrate #4.

10-Day Notice to Quit - Eviction

A landlord’s first step per the Indiana eviction laws is to serve a written 10-Day Notice to Quit.

An Indiana 10-Day Notice to Quit for non-payment of rent is a letter that informs a tenant that they have breached their residential rental agreement. The owner of the property may also file for breach of contract. Examples include selling drugs, not maintaining property, or others living on premises that aren’t in contract. The tenant will have no less than 10 days from delivery of the notice to either pay the rent in full or deliver possession of the premises back to the landlord.

 
The Notice to Quit form is available at either La Porte County Sheriff’s Civil Office. The cost for service of the Notice to Quit is $35.00. Payable in cash, cashier’s check, or money order (Payable to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office).

Foreign Writs

These are papers sent from another state to be served. There is a fee of $60.00 per defendant/per address. The ONLY exception to the fee of $60.00 is if the paperwork involves a Protection Order, Restraining Order, or No Contact Order. There is no charge for those types of papers served. The fee is payable only by cashier’s check, Attorney’s check, or money order (Payable to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office). No Personal checks will be accepted.

Tax Warrants

If you have received a letter from the La Porte County Sheriff regarding unpaid Indiana State taxes, please follow the directions on the letter and send the payments to the address listed on the letter. No personal or business checks will be accepted. Cash is always welcome if paying in person. Payments are only accepted in the La Porte Office.
